A sacred place
for the passing year.
Daoist tradition honours Tai Sui as a deity of the year. Each of the sixty stem–branch combinations has an associated deity, taking a turn in the cycle. Observance expresses reverence and a wish for peace.
Natal Tai Sui
Associated with the stem–branch pair of the birth year. A twelve-animal zodiac sign alone does not identify the complete sixty-year position.
Tai Sui of the year
Associated with the year being considered. Comparing natal and annual branches is one way into the tradition.
A celestial tradition
Some temples honour Doumu and the sixty Tai Sui deities together in a Yuanchen Hall, connecting the heavens, the calendar and human life.
Sixty meetings.
A cycle renewed.
Stems and branches advance together, returning to Jiazi after sixty positions. An animal sign repeats every twelve years; the complete stem–branch pair repeats every sixty.

Where does the year begin?
This selector gives the stem–branch name associated with a Gregorian year; it does not treat 1 January as the traditional boundary. Our BaZi year pillar uses the instant of Lichun. Tai Sui comparisons offer Lunar New Year or Lichun. Births near these boundaries need a specific date, time and convention. Temple observances follow their own schedules.

Value, clash, punishment, harm and break name branch relationships used in common Tai Sui readings. More than one can apply. They invite careful reflection; the labels alone do not tell the story of a person’s year.
值Value
The natal and annual branches match: the familiar twelve-year return of an animal sign.
冲Clash
Branches stand opposite in the twelve-part cycle, such as Zi and Wu. Readings often reflect on change and adjustment.
刑Punishment
A traditional category with several patterns, including some self-relations. Interpretive schools differ on the conditions.
害Harm
A named pairing, such as Zi and Wei. It can prompt reflection on communication and consideration.
破Break
A named pairing, such as Zi and You. Read it in the context of the whole chart and lived circumstances.
The reading shows its relationship and year-boundary conventions. The zodiac comparison is one part of a chart that also considers year, month, day and hour.

Temple observance
Tai Sui observances may include recitation, reverence and petitions, conducted according to a temple’s liturgical tradition. Ask the temple about its practice and visiting arrangements.
Carry the intention onward
Keep a promise, care for what you use, listen to family, or finish a responsibility thoughtfully. Give a wish an expression in daily conduct.
Fu and the talisman pouch
A talisman, its pouch and a temple observance each have their own setting. Begin with the inscription, the work and the tradition to which it belongs.

Taiyi Zhenren and the sixty Tai Sui deities have distinct identities. The Taiyi household scroll is described by its inscription; this page concerns natal and annual Tai Sui.
