纸上符文
Talismanic brushwork on paper
Blue and yellow grounds reveal different qualities of the written gesture.
A form, a story,
a way of seeing.
A fu is more than a sequence of ordinary characters. Its signs belong to religious traditions of writing, and the eye encounters them as a composition of lines, turns, density and empty space.
The blue sheets make the light-coloured strokes especially vivid. A yellow sheet offers another comparison, with thinner writing arranged beside a larger central sign. These photographs allow the brushwork to be observed without presenting the marks as instructions for ritual practice.
Details to notice
- Follow the changes between broad turns and fine lines.
- Compare the spacing and colour of the three examples.
